What Constitutes Good Usage The idea of good usage can be explored in many facets. Many writers such as Dowst, Sale, Thomas and Albutt have enlightened me to their own views on what constitutes good or bad usage. The thought never occurred to me that I too am guilty in many ways of improper use of the English language, including grammar, word use, tense, structure, the list could go on. But then again what is termed good use by me may not be good to another. To me, my own personal use of language is acceptable and could probably stand some improvement. However, without learning grammar, syntax, diction, etc., I never would have been able to get to where I am now today. According to Audre Lorde in Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches, the American norm is à ¬white, thin, male, young, heterosexual, Christian and financially secure.à ® This seems to be the epitome of one who has à ¬good usageà ® of the English language. I donà ­t see it that way. Good usage begins early in life and is a never-ending process. The population of today is becoming more diverse as ethnic groupsà ­ population figures present and project into the near future. According to Cyndee Miller in Advertising Age, the Asian American population is the fastest growing ethnic group in the United States and is expected to reach around 15 million by early next century. To a good portion of this growing segment, English is not their first language. In fact, translating the English language into other languages loses a lot of à ¬formà ® rather than substance. Many languages do not have the same grammatical or structural form which makes it extremely difficult translating either way. So how can society judge what is good or bad use? Usage of English language has its purpose, to convey meaning and understanding to a certain audience. But how does that affect one who does not speak or understand the language? People still communicate in their own Native tongues and have so for many years. With the globalization of many companies today, communication is very critical. Without effective communication, markets of today would be limited as there would be no exports or imports, etc. The audience that receives the message communicated via English language plays a key factor in determining its à ¬properà ® usage. For example, when I go back and visit my relatives, ità ­s not important to use the à ¬officialà ® style for particular word use.

Linear and staff management

Managers have different titles in various organizations. No matter what the label is, there is a difference in authority between line and staff management. There are two basic kinds of management positions: line and staff. Linear Management Staff Management 1 . The most common of all formal relationships in organizations today is the supervisor-subordinate one.This line or operational supervisor, whatever his title, has the power and authority to direct the actions of the subordinate who is accountable for carrying out certain duties. . The supervisor might use any one or combination of many management styles in working with his staff, but he will see that there are results. It's those results that produce revenue, whether it's profit from a business or non-profit grants from the government. 1. The staff manager or supervisor is in a position that supports line management.He is usually a specialist of some kind. Examples are the manager of the IT department, and the director of HR. 2 . Managers in these positions do not have the authority to tell the line staff how to do the work for which the organization exist. Instead, the taff manager or supervisor is responsible for making sure all the supports are in place so the line staff are hired, trained, equipped and supported while they carry out the actual operations. 3. Staff management authority is very different from line management authority.While the line manager makes sure that there is revenue, the staff manager often has to spend that money to support further operations. This can lead to tensions in the workplace, especially when there is no clear understanding of the difference in the authority of the positions. Relationship Between Line and Staff Management ere are four ways of looking at the relationship a staff manager has with a line manager. Prescribe. To do this, a staff manager can prescribe certain procedures in his specialist area.For example, he can develop and implement recruiting policies and p rocedures that are used across the organization. The line manager is expected to follow those organizational procedures unless he has a solid rationale for within his specialization. For example, a line manager might propose that two of his staff attend certain management courses. The staff manager of the training section can concur with or veto this proposal as it is within his specialty. Be heard. A staff manager has the right, the authority, to participate in the discussions, if not the decision-making, pertaining to his specialty.For example, the manage in HR maybe not have a veto vote on a new recruit, but he does have the right to voice his opinion on the suitability of the candidate. Be informed. This function authorizes the staff manager to be informed within certain areas of activity. A common example of this is the position of director of finance. An operations, line manager has full authority to spend funds as he pleases within his budget, but he is required to keep the d irector of finance informed.

Racism Is A Common Cause Of Racism - 1373 Words

Racism is one of the world’s major issues as of today. Many people are not aware of how much racism still exists in our work, schools or anywhere else where our social lives are happening. It is obvious that racism is bad as it was many decades ago, but it sure has not stayed away from all of us. Racism still exists and it is about time that people need to start thinking about ways to get a solution to this matter. There could be a debate that people were brought into the world as a racist or not. However it is not the case at all. In fact, no one can be born a racist. People learn by becoming one as they grow from child to adulthood. Mainstream, institutions, or government, and even some hidden events in Canada’s past are a few of the possible instigations and solutions to racism. Frustration is a very common cause of racism. If one is having this type of social issue, they tend to get very angry with people and the problem is that some may not be even concerned with their situation. For example, when a person is having a tough time in terms of the economic, people find a way and blame immigrants for taking away their jobs or creating fewer opportunities. This type of an analysis is very easy to make but when one makes this assumption, it usually leads to hate towards any minority group. The psychological factor can kick in, and find a way to be disturbed which can cause racism. People with tough childhood may sometimes harbor anger and hate towards others.
